What this sugar calculator estimates

The calculator converts a daily energy intake into a maximum amount of free sugars. Free sugars include sugars added to foods and drinks, plus sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juice and fruit-juice concentrates. They do not include the sugars inside intact whole fruit and vegetables or the lactose naturally present in plain milk.

Each gram of carbohydrate contributes about 4 kilocalories. A 10% target on a 2,000 kcal intake is therefore 200 kcal from free sugars, or 50 g. A 5% target is 25 g.

Formula

Free sugar grams = daily kilocalories × target percentage ÷ 4.

The teaspoon estimate divides grams by four. It is a practical kitchen approximation, not a lab conversion for every type of sugar or syrup.
